Direction

We are coming close to the date of our departure for the USA. And the album launch. And trying to get everything finished up with our Hong Kong roles before we leave.

But yesterday we took some time to work on a music video. As much as I have worked around cameras and help produce videos very often, I still get pretty nervous when I have to stand in front of the camera. What do you do with your hands?! Suddenly my every eye movement is being analysed, and if my timing is off by a split second, my dear-perfectionist Director will notice!

As we shot some interview segments, I found myself becoming frustrated - I had never thought that I was particularly good in front of the camera, so in this shoot really wanted to portray the passion and vision that I have in an eloquent way. But it seemed that the more I tried to come across as honest and genuine, the less genuine it looked.

And so my director just reminded me of a few key things. “Tell it to me. Don’t act. Feel it.” Sometimes we try to struggle on doing things our own way, getting frustrated, thinking we know better and that we don’t need other people to tell us how to do it.

We need to know how to take direction. It is hard. It is humbling. But it is really all about trust. Trusting that your someone knows their craft, their field, better than you do. And allowing yourself to come under that guidance and leadership so that you can shine in your skills too.

In the end, I think we captured something. I am still learning, and I’m sure I’ll never feel 100% natural talking or singing into a camera. But if I am humble, listen and learn, then I’ll get there in time...
